Metallus

Construction of the “Märklin Seilbagger mit Tieflöffel”

When I bought this set second hand it unfortunately had a few omissions and additions that where not part of the set, but fortunately I had the Metallus Track set and some Meccano parts to help.

A number of changes where made during the build, here I’ve used a 4 hole red flat girder to aid rigidity and to make it easier to get square.

The double angle strips and the black L shaped brackets were held in place by long bolts through the boom, which distorted the boom when tightened enough to hold the pieces in place, so I replaced them with a short bolt and lock nut for each piece.

Closeup of one of the hook rollers, the roller bearing has 4mm bore and 9mm outside diameter.

The chassis before being beefed up, the tracks and wheels had been modded for another project and to save time I used as them as is.

The original chassis flexed to much for my liking with the weight of the full superstructure, the turntable was only supported fore and aft, so added support on either side and double up the cross members as well.

Here you can see the resulting box like structure producing a very rigid chassis.

The Metallus caterpillar track set, works well and far cheaper than an all Meccano solution.
