PMC Twenty5.21 stand-mount loudspeakers

Since the upgrade to the Cambridge CXR200 I have become increasingly aware of the Q300’s sonic shortcomings, after considerable listening there were three clearly identifiable areas where the Q300’s suffered:

  1. The Q300’s could be tiring to listen too, but this aspect went away once I’d added the Q400b subwoofer and integrated into the system, all I could think of is that low bass was affecting the midrange in an unpleasant manner hence the tiring affect.
  2. At low levels the sound muddied up mainly due I think to the midrange   noise emanating from the reflex port, this was made more apparent with the added subwoofer. A rolled up duster inserted into the port fixed this problem, the foam plugs supplied with the Q300’s had little affect.
  3. Vocals were submerged in the mix and I found that the KEF R300 speaker I was considering as an upgrade suffered the same problem.

With a 3m x 4m lounge, floor standing speakers are not an option and the stand mounted speakers I listened to suffered in similar ways until I heard the PMC Twenty5.21, they are a revelation, from low to high volumes their clarity is exceptional and the vocals sit in the audio mix where the mixing engineer intended they should.

It must be remembered that the room size, shape and furnishings can have a dramatic affect on the sound of a loudspeaker so your milage may vary, for the moment I am using Q400b sub and for the moment I couldn’t be happier with the audio from whatever source.
